Slow by choice

Good bread takes two days. We don’t rush it.

Hearth & Crumb started with one oven, one sourdough starter and a stubborn belief that York deserved a proper neighbourhood bakery. Nine years on, the starter is still going and so are we.

  • Flour from British millsStoneground wheat and rye, mostly grown within a day’s drive of the bakery.
  • Nothing you can’t pronounceFlour, water, salt and time. No improvers, no premixes, no shortcuts.
  • Baked through the nightOur bakers start at 2am so the first loaves are cooling on the racks by 7.
