Ashby & ColeAccountants, Bristol

About us

A small firm, on purpose.

Four people in a first floor office near the harbour, looking after around 340 businesses and landlords. Big enough to cover holidays, small enough that we answer the phone ourselves.

A calm, light office corner with a round wooden table, a curved sofa and plants

Eleanor and Daniel met at a large accountancy practice in the city centre, where they spent a decade looking after businesses that were far too small to get much attention.

The work was good, but the model was not. Clients were billed by the hour, so they stopped calling. Questions waited until year end. Small problems quietly became expensive ones.

In 2015 they set up Ashby & Cole with a simple idea: charge one fixed monthly fee that includes every phone call and email, and give each client a named accountant who actually knows their business. If you can ask without worrying about the bill, you ask sooner, and we can help more.

Ten years on, we still work the same way. We are not trying to be the biggest firm in Bristol. We would much rather be the one our clients recommend to their friends.

The team

The people you will actually speak to.

No call centre and no junior you have never heard of. Every client has a named accountant, and the rest of the team know your file too.

Tom Hartley

Your first point of contact. Tom sets up new clients, sorts HMRC authorisations and is getting our sole traders ready for MTD.

How we work

Three promises we make to every client.

They are written on the wall of our meeting room, and we hold ourselves to them.

No surprises

One fixed fee, agreed up front. If something falls outside it, we tell you and quote before doing the work.

Plain English

We explain your tax bill as we would to a friend. If you have to ask what a word means, we used the wrong one.

Early, not on time

Deadlines are a last resort. We aim to file returns weeks before they are due, so you can plan for the bill.

The office

Come and see us, or we can come to you.

We are on the first floor of an old tea merchant’s building in BS1, ten minutes’ walk from Temple Meads. Pop in for a meeting, or we can visit your shop, site or kitchen table.
